Palestra – Profa. Dra. Karina A. Barbosa (USACH – Chile)

23/08/2018 09:33

Seminar in the scope of Escala docente AUGM Program at UFSC

This seminar is divided in two parts:

Part One: Knowing Chile and possibilities for cooperation with the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. This presentation is an invitation to know a little more about Chile, through a general presentation of Chilean culture and customs, typical places and university academic structure. In addition, it is showed the possibilities for cooperation and collaboration for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for teachers with the University of Santiago de Chile, in particular the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Part Two: Time-varying descriptor systems.  More technologic advances are normally related with more complex systems, with different types of interconnections between its components. Many of these systems, such as electric power systems or robotic systems, can be mathematically modeled as descriptor systems, that is, systems with combine differential equations to describe system dynamics, with algebraic restrictions to show the relationships between state variables. The purpose of this seminar is to make a brief introduction to this class of systems and present some recently obtained results for uncertain time-varying descriptor systems.

Karina A. Barbosa was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She received the B.S. Degree in Applied Mathematical from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1997, and her Master and Doctor degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, Brazil, in 1999 and 2003, respectively. From 2005 to 2007, she held a post- doctoral position at Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica (LNCC/MCT), Petrópolis, Brazil. She was also an Academic Visitor at Centre for Complex Dynamic Systems and Control (CDSC), at The University of Newcastle, Australia from August 2007 to June 2008. In 2009, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, Chile. Currently, she is a full time Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Universidad de Santiago de Chile and member of Fondecyt study group of Engineering 2. She is an IEEE Senior Member, and since 2011 is part of the Chilean Automatic Control Society (ACCA) Board of Directors. Her research interests include robust filtering, robust control and descriptor systems.
