Título Resilient and Efficient Frameworks for Blockchains
Abstract: Due to the recent rise of interest in distributed ledger technology and blockchain applications the field of byzantine fault tolerance received additional attention. Novel algorithms as Proof of Work (PoW), Proof of Stake (PoS) and hybrid algorithms have been developed to cope with the openness of these systems. Nonetheless, these systems either do not scale very well with the number of servers, or don’t scale very well in terms of throughput. Traditional solutions from the field of byzantine fault tolerance like Stewart or Fireplug scale well in terms of throughput and numbers of servers but do not deal with the openness of the systems. This leaves a number of open problems to solve which we aim to tackle in the course of this P.h.D thesis. The blockchain also spurred academic interest to solve issues in a wide range of applications in the fields of economy, sociology, politics, biology, etc. In this context we plan to investigate how we can solve real world problems by applying solutions involving distributed ledger technology including cryptocurrencies and smart contracts. Nonetheless, while it is possible to solve numerous real world problems by applying the blockchain and distributed ledger technology to it, the resulting immutability is a problem in the face of laws which guarantee the right to be forgotten of the users. Based on that we plan on investigating different approaches which could be used to guarantee the immutability of the chain on one hand, but also allow people to be forgotten after a fixed period of time.
