Required Documents

The applications must include:

and the following documents, to be mailed after filling out the application form:

  • Transcript of Records of the undergraduate degree.
  • Transcript of Records of the Master’s degree.
  • Copy of the undergraduate degree diploma;
  • Copy of the Master’s degree diploma or statement of completion of requirements for the degree (the document must have been certified by a notary, or can be validated at the Program’s office by presenting the original document);
  • Certified copy of the Identity Card and CPF (Individual Taxpayer Number);
  • Certified copy of Birth Certificate (with seal from notary house);
  • Certified copy of the passport with photo and personal data, and a copy of the respective visa from the Immigration Office for foreign applicants;
  • A 3cm X 4cm photo;
  • Curriculum Vitae (in Lattes Platform);
  • A letter of assessment from the Master’s thesis supervisor or two letters of recommendation from university professors, or qualified professionals, who can assess the potential of the applicant to pursue advanced studies  (a letter template can be downloaded from: DOC – PDF).
  • Detailed work plan to be developed by the applicant, which should include motivation, research problem, justification, objectives, methodology, schedule, references, list of courses to be taken and to be validated if any. The work plan should be elaborated in cooperation with the intended supervisor, who should be a faculty member of the Graduate Program in Automation and Systems Engineering.

Selection Process

Applications are accepted continuously and assessed shortly after being received.

In the assessment, the admissions committee considers the merit and technical quality of the research project, the alignment of the candidate with the expertise of the supervisor, the academic record of the candidate, and the availability of the supervisor to supervise the research work.

In order to grant scholarships, the committee consider the following criteria:

  • Curriculum Vitae: teaching assistance experience, undergraduate research work, publications, participation in technical events, proficiency in foreign languages.
  • Project: methodological aspects, relevance, mastery of the topic.
  • Academic Record: grade point average (GPA), grades in basic courses and others courses related to the intended area of research, course failures, time taken to complete the Master’s degree, grade attributed to the Master’s Program by the Ministry of Education in case of Brazilian applicants.
  • Recommendation Letters: degree of acquaintance of the referee, information given by the referee about the potential of the candidate to pursue independent and advanced research.

Note:  foreign candidates, once accepted, should also present a student visa.
