University Library

The University Library is a facility aimed at providinge information technology services and support to all activities related to teaching, research, and outreach carried out at UFSC, while contributing to the improvement of the general welfare and quality of life.

The building of the University Central Library has a total area of 9134 m² and house collections of all areas of knowledge in various media, reference materials, special collections and institutional documents that record the scientific production of UFSC. The institutional documents include dissertations, theses, periodicals and books produced at the university.

The University Library provides online access to its content and services, and its website has recorded over 1,189,000 accesses in 2005.

CAPES Journals

The CAPES Journal Portal gives professors, researchers, students and staff access to research works that have been published in international venues. The Portal provides convenient access to articles from over 9640 international journals, published abroad and nationally, and over 90 data bases with abstracts. It also includes a selection of important sources of academic information that are accessible from the web without any cost.

The University Library has a collection consisting of diverse documents, which is continually expanding, although not at the pace to fully meet the demands. The collection of periodicals has been increased to a great extent because of the CAPES Journal Portal.

In 2005, a new data-base was made available, providing easy access to more than 40,000 titles, from all areas of knowledge, in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

UFSC University Library is integrated with a number of information networks with the aim of enabling its users to have access to a large body of information, and also allowing scientists and students from other parts of the country and abroad to have access to its collection. UFSC University Library is affiliated to the Brazilian Committee of University Libraries (CBBU). It became the head library of the CBBU at the 20th National Symposium of University Libraries, which took place in Natal, RN, in 2004. For this reason, UFSC acted on behalf of CBBU in various committees, including the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT), CAPES Journal Portal, and the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research (INEP). UFSC has thus contributed to the development of policies for national information dissemination.
